The Cellar at Duckworth’s

My first experience with #dinnerfortwelve was awesome!  We went to The Cellar with some other couples and celebrated my friend Lisa’s birthday.

The Cellar at Duckworth’s is an American gastropub and known for their specialty beers and signature cocktails.  It is inspired by the early 1900s, (the underground space built originally in 1912) The Cellar has a speakeasy, prohibition-era feel with its original brick walls and exposed ceiling joists.   It is small, dark and cozy, and they don’t take reservations after 7pm, so plan accordingly.

I love getting dressed up with my hubby for a nice dinner out!  Bonus points that we don’t have to get a sitter anymore.  My daughter took this right before we left.  The Cellar is pretty dark, and so the other pictures are darker.

Drinks:  A friend and I split a bottle of the Kaiken Malbec and Daniel got a  NoDa Jam Session..  (support local!)  Some of my friends did order the cocktails and said they were fabulous!

Drink Summary:  Order what you like and plenty of it.

App One:  char-grilled bluepoint oysters with creole butter, pecorino, baguette. (These were good, but I like my oysters simple…  raw with some lemon juice.

App Two:  Expresso rubbed lam carpaccio with cured beets, mustard seeds, gherkins, and parmesan. (Again…this was good and I love the fancy name.  But I could make something pretty similar at home.  I mean, this was basically a high end lunchable.)

App Three:  Tuna Tartare with sesame seeds, chunky guacamole, chile oil, and wonton crisps. (I would get this again in a heartbeat!)

App Four:  dried garbanzo bean hummus with feta, cucumber, tomato, zaatar, and bread crisps.  (most of this went home to feed the chickens, so you can be the judge there.)

App Summary:  Get the Tuna Tartare…I will go back and try the caramelized brussels and the truffle mac and cheese.

My Main:  butter basted scallops with currants, cauliflower, turmeric, chorizo.  This was like a little party in my mouth and I loved every bite.

Daniel’s Main:  ribeye…they cook their steaks at 1800 degrees for a charred finish.  The tiny bite he gave me was amazing…and so was the arugula salad that came with it!

Main Dish Summary:  Yes to both of these…other table favorites were the filet and shrimp and grits.

We did not leave any room for dessert, but they have a cornflake crusted french toast with carrot cake that looked pretty awesome!

Its A Pleasant Life Rating:  4 stars

Fur Foster Parents

One of my 37in37 list items was to become a fur foster family.  Well, we did it!  We  are fostering Kasey and Jimmie (part of the NASCAR litter!) through Ruff Life Rescue.

These are two adorable pups are 10- 12 week old lab/Australian shepherd mix pups.

Ruff Life Animal Rescue was founded in October of 2012, as a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the unnecessary killing of adoptable dogs of the Carolinas.  We are strictly a foster based rescue, with hopes of opening up a no-kill shelter, complete with training, grooming and boarding facilities.  As of November, 7, 2012, Ruff Life Animal Rescue is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 non-profit rescue organization.

This is Kasey.  (They were already named, and they ask that you don’t rename them…we spent the night before at dinner arguing gently discussing  names for no reason!)

This is Jimmie.  Look at him looking at me!!!???

They love being outside and playing with balls and tug-of-war ropes.  Kasey and Jimmie are both crate trained, and sleep through the night.  We have pretty much potty trained them already too.

Toby is used to story time, and now these pups love it too!

They have completely taken over Toby’s bed…and our hearts.

Weekend Recap

What a weekend!  I know the Panthers did not win the Super Bowl, but we had such a great season.  All of the excitement behind this has the vibration in Charlotte pretty high, and I hope this doesn’t damper it.

Here is a recap of our weekend!

Friday night we were all exhausted from a week of work and school.   I immediately poured some wine when I walked in the door and started dinner prepping.   Lucky for me,  my hubby called and said he was on his way with pizza!  I just kept drinking the wine, peeled the carrots and sliced the apples for the sides.  My daughter snagged a babysitting job, so I dropped her off while the boys started the Avengers movie.

Saturday morning, I taught my class at Charlotte Yoga.  What a class!  There are times…like Saturday morning, when I know I am doing exactly what I am supposed to do.  I felt completely in my element.  I love when I leave a class knowing that I inspired my students to be more than they even thought possible.

IMG_1021This girl went on a date.  Her second one.   Yes.  She is only 12 years old.  Her boyfriend is a sweetheart and his mom is pretty cool too.  (I became friends with her after stalking his family on FB and IG)  A little background… Kadyn and her boyfriend had their first date at the Y a few weeks ago.  They played soccer and basketball.  I was totally fine with this…until she asked if they could go to the mall this weekend.  Deep breaths and long talks later…my hubby and I agreed.   AHHHH!  When did my baby girl grow up?

I know she isn’t grown up by any means, but I do trust that she will make good decisions based on what we have taught her.  I feel really confident that my husband and I have done a good job showing and leading her to do the right thing.

I had a Plexus event in the afternoon with one of my teammates.  Afterwards, I came home and took my Toby on a long walk in the sunshine.  Gotta love Charlotte weather!

After our walk, I made a quick kale/romaine caeser mix.  I have been really into this lately…I just add a different protein.  We’ve had blackened chicken, shrimp, sliced beef, and even boiled eggs on top.

After dinner, my hubby and I headed to an event at the new Charlotte Yoga studio.  The Park Road location will still be open, but the new studio opens next weekend!  I will be teaching at the new location on Wednesday’s 12-12:50pm.  I am so excited to be a part of such an awesome beginning.  The entire floor is now filled with people’s written intentions.  It was very inspiring to walk around in the candlelight and see what friends and fellow yogis wrote.

We got up early Sunday and headed to church, where my daughter participated in youth Sunday.  Always one of my favorite sermons…even more so because she was in it!

I headed to the Y after church to work out and teach a class, then on to a friend’s house for some pre-game fun .   Kadyn made her deviled eggs, and I brought a bottle of champagne to get the afternoon started.

My hubby stopped by the 704 pop up shop Friday and got our family four some cute new tees.  But he was so anxious about the game and wanted to watch it in the comfort of our home.  We left our friends house before kick off and make it home just in time for the coin toss!

I would love to hear from you!

What was your favorite Super Bowl snack?
How old were you when you went on your first date?

Have an awesome week!  I have been playing around in the kitchen, so stay tuned for some good recipes!
