What works for me!

Asacol HD

Asacol HD is basically mesalamine, which  affects a substance in the body that causes inflammation, tissue damage, and diarrhea.

Mesalamine is used to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and proctosigmoiditis. Mesalamine is also used to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring.

It does not cure ulcerative colitis, but it may decrease symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding caused by irritation/swelling in the colon/rectum.   It is believed to work by keeping your body from making certain natural chemicals that may cause pain and swelling.

side effects may include:  (the less serious ones…)

  • mild nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, gas
  • fever, sore throat, or other flu symptoms
  • constipation
  • headache or dizziness
  • tired feeling; or
  • skin rash

The only side effect I have felt is dizziness.  Which sucks pretty bad when you are a yogi trying to balance!

Lowering my Dose

42 pills a week vs 28 pills a week.

I had a clean colonoscopy on 11-1-2012, so I am in the process of lowering my medication dose.  I was prescribed 3 800mg tablets twice daily…Now I am trying 2 800mg tablets twice daily.  So far, so good.

Reducing just 2 pills a day doesn’t seem like much…but in a week, I take 14 less pills.  That’s gotta be a good thing.

Other Drugs…

I take over the counter vitamins daily as well as the Asacol HD.

I take a Fish Oil liquid softgel for a healthy heart, immunity, and for the anti-inflammatory properties.

I take a Super B-Complex to help regulate blood glucose throughout the day and keep energy levels constant.

I take a mulitvitamin because the body needs 13 essential vitamins to function properly.  It has to have vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K, B12, and the 7 B-complex vitamins.  I know Dr. Oz says we pee half of this out, but I honestly feel better when I am taking my vitamins!

Last, and certainly not least…Vitamin D.  This is my superstar!  I take 2,000 IU in the summer (there is already 1,000 IU in my multi) and 4,000 IU in the winter months.  Vitamin D regulates blood pressure, reduces stress and tension, relieves body aches and pains by reducing muscle spasms, reduces respiratory infections, helps in differentiation of the cells, aids in insulin secretion (meaning weight loss…hello!), helps fight depression, improves overall skin health by reducing wrinkles, makes skin soft, strong, and smooth, and improves cardiovascular strength by providing a protective lining for the blood vessels.
